Dolphin Swim, Coral Snorkeling & Sandbank near Mnemba Island

Spot wild dolphins, snorkel colorful coral reefs, and relax on a white sandbank in the turquoise waters around Mnemba Island, all in a small group of up to 6 guests. We set off early, before the crowds, guided by our Animal & Nature First approach: we never chase or disturb the dolphins, and everything happens naturally, on their terms.

Your day starts with a hotel pickup around 6:00 AM (if you’ve booked the option with hotel transfer). Yes, it’s early, and there’s a good reason for it (more on that below). After arriving at Muyuni Beach, meet your local crew and set off by small fiber boat (max 6 guests) around 7:00 AM.

As we head toward Mnemba, keep your eyes on the water. These waters are one of the dolphins’ favorite places, and some days they’re curious and playful, swimming right up to the boat as if they’ve come to say hello. If they appear and conditions allow, you may get the chance to slip into the water and swim nearby. Our local guides know the area well, including how close it’s respectful to get, and we follow the local marine conservation rules. How close the dolphins come is always up to them, which makes every moment with them even more special.

Around 8:30 AM, join a guided snorkeling session at a coral reef full of tropical fish and colorful corals. All snorkeling equipment is included, and life jackets are available for extra comfort and safety.

Afterwards, relax on a white sandbank (tide permitting) with fresh tropical fruit and refreshments. Swim, sunbathe, or simply take in the Indian Ocean views before heading back to shore around 10:30 AM. From there, a transfer takes you back to your hotel (if you’ve booked the option with hotel transfer), with most of the day still ahead of you.

Why we start so early?

The waters around Mnemba are a protected marine area and one of Zanzibar’s most popular spots. That popularity means the area can get very busy later in the morning, with many boats and swimmers in the water. Early mornings are calmer and quieter, and the dolphins tend to be more active. If the area does get busy, we give the dolphins their space.

We see dolphins on most trips, but as they’re wild animals, we can’t guarantee it. Our small boats and early start are how we give both you and the dolphins the best chance of a calm, relaxed morning on the water.
