Tanzania & Zanzibar Travel Visa Guide: Entry Requirements Explained

Planning a trip to Tanzania and Zanzibar is exciting, but knowing the entry requirements ahead of time can save you a lot of stress and help you start your adventure smoothly. From visas to mandatory insurance and vaccinations, here’s everything you need to know to ensure a seamless arrival.

Visas: Easy Options for Every Traveler

Most visitors to Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania will need a visa, and the good news is that there are convenient ways to get it. If you prefer flexibility, visa on arrival is available at Zanzibar’s Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, where you can pay in cash (USD is preferred) or by card. The process is straightforward and usually quicker than going through the online system.

For extra peace of mind, you can also apply for an e-visa online. This is a convenient option if you prefer to arrange everything before your trip. The official Tanzanian government portal is: https://visa.immigration.go.tz/
. Once approved, you’ll receive a QR code to present upon arrival. While the visa on arrival process at Zanzibar or mainland airports is straightforward and fast, applying online ensures you have your visa ready in advance for a completely stress-free start to your journey.

Mandatory Zanzibar Travel Insurance

Here’s something travelers sometimes overlook: Zanzibar now requires a specific mandatory travel insurance for everyone entering the island. Unlike standard travel insurance, this policy must be purchased directly from the official Zanzibar government website: https://visitzanzibar.go.tz/insurance

The cost is USD 44 per adult and USD 22 per child (ages 3–17), while children under 3 are covered for free. This policy covers emergencies, medical care, and 24/7 assistance. You’ll receive a certificate and QR code, which you must show at immigration. Even if you already have your own travel insurance, this mandatory policy is still required — but we recommend keeping your personal travel coverage as a safety net for trip cancellations, lost luggage, or adventurous activities. Important: this mandatory Zanzibar travel insurance can only be purchased online through the official portal — it is not available to buy at the airport, so make sure to arrange it in advance before your trip.

Health Requirements & Vaccinations

While no vaccinations are strictly required to enter Tanzania, health authorities recommend several precautions. Travelers arriving from countries with a yellow fever risk must provide proof of vaccination. Routine vaccines like tetanus, polio, diphtheria, and measles are also advised. Depending on your itinerary and planned activities, vaccines for hepatitis A & B, typhoid, and rabies might also be recommended. Checking with your local travel clinic ensures you have the most up-to-date advice and are fully protected.

Drones, Cameras & Respectful Travel

Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania are generally welcoming to photographers, but there are a few rules to keep in mind. Drones often require permits for commercial or filming purposes, and certain areas, especially national parks and government zones, may restrict their use. Photography of people and sacred sites should always be respectful, and wildlife should never be disturbed for a picture.

Planning Ahead for a Smooth Arrival

With your visa, mandatory Zanzibar insurance, and vaccinations taken care of, you can focus on enjoying the breathtaking landscapes, turquoise waters, and unforgettable wildlife experiences. Arriving prepared means less time worrying and more time exploring the stunning islands and savannahs of Tanzania.
